The history of the Martinellis originating in Italy is well known, however on Carolyn (Charles) Martinelli's side of the family our history in Sonoma County goes back even further. George A. Charles and his wife Elizabeth (Carolyn's great-grandparents) came by wagon train to the area in the 1860s. Through the Homestead Act they were deeded a piece of land in the remote Sonoma Coast, where they would rear their six children and raise sheep. More than 100 years later, grandson George H. Charles retired from sheep ranching and planted the Charles Ranch vineyard, one of the first vineyards to be planted in what is now the Fort Ross - Seaview AVA. Formerly called the "Wild" or "True" Sonoma Coast, this area is known for land that is steep, rocky, and at high elevation, which differentiates it from the larger Sonoma Coast AVA.
